The High Line Park
May 5, 2011 by Al
New York’s High Line Railway was built in the 1930’s to move industrial freight trains off street level for the safety of pedestrians. The line cuts right through the centre of NYC and was used to service goods to the Meatpacking District. Having remained unused since the 80’s, in the late 90’s Mayor Guiliani (under pressure from private property developers) had plans to tear it down until two men Joshua David and Robert Hammond rallied against the council, won and came up with this plan for a public park.
Once they got the go ahead they called on the public to come up with ideas of what to do with the space. With input from the neighbourhood it was designed by Architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and proudly stands today.
