Minimix 08: I Am The Cosmos
This weeks minimix has been whipped together by Cian Murphy from Dublin band I Am The Cosmos. For the last while the duo of Ross Turner and Cian have been switch flickin’, guitar lickin’, into the groove clickin’, and to the man stickin’ the sounds that’ll form the basis of their debut release. Although no dates have yet been set for this you can check out their soundcloud for some sound proof of what’s to come. Also worth date making in the calender is their first live show with fellow new comers Lasertom & The Blast Crew in Twisted Pepper on Saturday 13th of August.
Track 1
Durutti Column – Sketch For Summer
Summer’s (sort of) here, so it seemed appropriate to begin the mix with a summer-themed track. Some serious shredding going on here – ideal listening of a summer’s eve.
Track 2
Chromatics – Circled Sun
At this stage most people probably know what to expect from Chromatics, but that doesn’t make their music any less compelling. From the re-mastered edition of their Night Drive LP. Smokey vocal time.
Track 3
Bardeux – When We Kiss
My attempt to break it down with one or two slow jams; Bardeux were a late 80’s electronic pop duo, and as far as I know this was their only real hit. Songs like these straddle the line between genuine heartfelt sentiment and utter cheese. I’d like to think this just about makes the cut. 808s and heartbreak.
Track 4
Beaumont – Midnight
The second of my two-song breakdown. I like the guitar-through-a-talkbox-y sound in this one, reminiscent of Daft Punk’s Something About Us.
Track 5
Francis Lai – New-York
This track was covered by Amanda Lear on the 1981 Incognito album, though I think the French version lends the song an allure that Lear’s lacks. Also I’m a sucker for that snare sound.
Track 6
Matthew Dear – You Put A Smell On Me (Breakbot Remix)
Great synthy reworking of one of the standout tracks from last year’s Black City.
Track 7
Blood Orange – Sex Cray
This one is a recommendation from Ross – it’s the dude who used to be in Test Icicles/Lightspeed Champion. Personally, it’s a welcome departure from the style of his earlier projects – creep-funk at its dirtiest.
