Guerilla Libraries
I’ve often wondered what might become of the now almost defunct payphone kiosk. With the rise of the mobile phones phone boxes in Ireland are usually a lonely looking scene.
New York’s John Locke thinks people should read more. So in the past few months, the Columbia architecture graduate has been sneaking around Manhattan with a sack of donated books and custom-made shelves, converting old pay phones into pop-up libraries.
He has open sourced his plan for the shelves should anyone wish to replicate the process in their own neighborhood. Jon has set up a group called DUB (The Department of Urban Betterment) with the help of the public carrying out similar projects with the aim of improving the community around them. Read and interview with the creator here.
