The Brixton Pound
March 14, 2012 by Karl
Launched in 2009, The Brixton Pound is the UK’s first local urban currency. It’s designed to support Brixton businesses and encourage local trade and production. The way it works is very simple — exchange your British Pounds (£) for the same amount in Brixton Pound (B£), and spend them in the large amount of independent shops and traders in the area, keeping the money in the local community. The video above tells the full story.
The Brixton Pound notes themselves are as bright and brilliant as the initiative. Local street art, buildings and heros are all celebrated on each note. It’s really is inspiring to see a local community coming together to support itself.
Dublin Dollar? Cork Crown? Sligo Shilling? Suggestions?
