Infrared Photography from Richard Mosse
Richard Mosse is an Irish photographer who caught my eye in this years Dublin Contemporary exhibition. For most of the last decade Mosse has been overseas capturing the wreckage left in the wake of conflict and natural disaster. His camera has brought him to Iran, former Yugoslavia, Pakistan and Haiti, however I came to find him via his infrared photographs of the Congolese jungle. In this series Mosse used a now defunct Aerochrome infrared film that was aptly developed for the US Military in the 40s, its aim “to detect camouflage and reveal a part of the spectrum of light the human eye could not see”. Aside from the obvious visual beauty, Mosse found the jarring magenta served to describe the surreal atmosphere of the dangerous jungle perfectly.
